Stoat Mania
I’ve wanted a ferret for as long as I can remember. In High School I decorated my binder with ferret pictures. I used to run around the house with a towel wrapped around my head and pretend I was a ferret, ferreting out snacks and shiny objects. Ok, so I made up the last part, but I really have always been passionate about ferrets. Relatively speaking, anyhow. While other people wanted cats and dogs and birds and other mundane pets, I always thought ferrets would be cool. It’s not like I have 17 ferrets living in my apartment or anything. And yes, I know they’re smelly and attention craving and conniving and sneaky, but so am I, so I think we’d get along just great. If you have a ferret, or know someone that does, let me know. I am subjecting my ferrets-make-great-pets bubble to the blogging community to either be reinforced or burst.

i hear they are illegal to have in the state of California. So i propose a covert mission to las vegas to pick one up.
You are correct, Josh Haas. They are illegal in CA. I hear that fellow ferret lovers are introducing legislation to rectify that situation, however.
And yes, Vegas. Where one could make ALL sorts of illicit purchases, if one were so inclined. So I'm told.
Ferrets are higher maintenance than parrots. And they smell something awful. Plus, cleaning up after them is not pleasant. We have 2 domestic ferrets at Zoo Boise that I help care for on my regular volunteer shift.
Plus, the reason they are illegal in CA is because the environment is too conducive to their breeding, and they would wreak havock on CA if they started breeding in the wild.
My suggestion: come visit Zoo Boise and I'll hook you up with quality ferret time.
Is 'higher maintenance than parrots' good or bad? I know they need a lot of attention and they recomend that you have at least two if not three so they can play together. And you can do stuff about the smell, right?
But besides the smell, are they as cool as they look? Are they smart? Playful? Full of personality?
This is awesome.
parrots and ferrets are perpetual 2-year-olds: attitude and mischeif alike. There's not much to do about the smell - even if they are de-scented (they have a scent gland like a skunk), they still smell bad. And the fecal matter is smelly and sticky... don't ask me how I know...
They are smart and playful, and full of personality. But they can be unpredicatable, especially when not handled frequently.
None of this negates the illegality of them in CA, though. Seriously, Zoo Boise is where it's at!
If it's so horrible to have ferrets in CA, how come they sell ferret food in stores here?
most people aren't educated on why one should not own a ferret. So some people do have them illegally. I can only guess that's the reason.
well, I must confess that I was feeling a bit guilty for spouting things off that I wasn't entirely sure of.... so I did some research and have fewer reasons than before that ferrets shouldn't be kept as pets in CA. check out www.ferret.org - the American Ferret Association. Also check out Californians for Ferret Legalization at www.ferretnews.org
I can't believe I'm contributing to this obsession.
hey you're back!!!ahhhh!! oh friend i do miss you....and your lovely wife too :) love you guys! i might be in town on saturday...if so can we hang?? let me know :)
Marie, you are an inspiration. And I'm also jealous that you get to hang out w/ my soul animal at the zoo.
i think daddy shawn wouldn't appreciate it so much, other than that i would totally be willing. I think i was more excited about the not so covert trip to vegas.
It would seem that the only logical solution would be to road trip up to Idaho. Yup, that's it.
